WE STOCKED UP on gourmet snacks and stogies to steel us
through a long winter's evening. Before you start shuffling the
cards
for your game night, you'll need provisions — but risk a last-minute
run to the 7-11, and you may end up with measly Chex Mix. We went
shopping on the Web for mail-order munchies, then asked
SmartMoney staffers to sample and rate them. Overall, we were
impressed by the candidates' freshness — and the prices should
easily beat out your local gourmet shop. Our favorites:
Coconut Rum Cake by Lady Carolyn

We found three delicious rum cakes on the Web: a dense, potent-smelling
Caribbean rum cake from We Take The Cake in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.;
a traditional rum cake from Tennessee Ritzy cakes in Nashville;
and the winner, Lady Carolyn Cakes in West Palm Beach, Fla.
What made it stand out? Unlike the first two, in
which the rum drowns out any other flavor, the Lady Carolyn strikes
a perfect balance of rum, coconut, walnut and raisins. Baker Carolyn
Barsky uses about two full cups of Jamaican rum in each 3-pound
cake — "enough to give you a head start on happy hour," commented
one SmartMoney staff member. It also comes in an elegant gold tin,
so it makes a great gift when you're heading to your neighbor's
for a rousing round of Mexican Train.

Thanks so much. My son (my baby) turns 34 this Sunday and it will be a surprise for him that we are having your cake. Jack is not much for sweets, but he goes absolutely crazy when he eats your cake. He is so funny, when he has your cake topped with either french vanilla ice cream or real whipped cream, he'll excuse himself from the table so no-one will talk to him and interrupt his savoring of your creation. Then when he is done, I get a kiss and a "thanks mom that was just the greatest". And I will relay your kind wishes to him.
